On September 14, New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio announced that within ten years, every school in the city will offer a computer science course for students.

Well at Floral Park Memorial, a club has already been formed to help address the need for this critical skill. The Computer Programming Club provides students with an opportunity to develop skills necessary to create apps, games and websites. It will even explore creating algorithms to trade stocks.

The first meeting was held on Friday, September 18. The club was created and will be led by Greg Simicich, a graduate of Floral Park Memorial who is currently serving as the school’s technology assistant.

The Programming Club will help students learn how to code. They will learn the programming language C++ (used for games, office applications, graphics, video editors and operating systems) during the first semester, and Javascript (the programming language of the web) during the second semester. With over 40 members, the Programming Club is one of the largest clubs at Floral Park Memorial.

“The computer science industry is taking the world by storm and to see this many students interested in such a technical and vast aspect of technology is amazing,” said Simicich.

Programming is one of those concepts that is difficult to self teach. By coming to the Programming Club, and learning as a group, the process will be much easier. Making the effort for those interested will be well worth the time spent.
