Emmanuel Jal visited Floral Park Memorial. Jal’s unique style of hip hop with its message of peace and reconciliation born out of his experiences as a child solider in the Sudan, has won worldwide acclaim. Emmanuel is a powerful advocate for peace and positive change with his “We Want Peace” and “Lose to Win” campaigns. These campaigns resonate with young people, increasing their emotional intelligence towards global issues and inspiring them to make a difference. It is through Jal’s story that young people relate to bigger social and political issues, and his visit teaches students about Global citizenship and taking a stand about world events. He has produced five music CDS, and his music has been featured in the documentaries “War Child” and “God Grew Tired of Us” as well as major motion pictures such as “Blood Diamond” and “The Good Lie.” He recently starred with Reese Witherspoon in the movie The Good Lie which focuses on the plight of the lost boys of the Sudan due to the long-term Sudanese Civil War. He is the author of War Child: a child soldier’s story which was available for sale and book signing after his presentation. About 100 students came to hear Emmanuel speak afterschool and were riveted by his very powerful story and uplifting messages. After his talk, students asked questions and then all sang along with Emmanuel to his song and music video “We Want Peace.” It was an inspiring program for all who attended.
