This past Saturday, Floral Park Memorial’s Science Olympiad team competed at the Nassau West Regional competition. The school’s top 15 competitors applied their science knowledge and skills in over 20 unique events ranging from chemistry, physics, electronics, biology, climate change, and many others. The students had been preparing for the regional competition since November, building various devices for construction based events or studying incredible amounts of information for paper-based tests. The competition lasts the entire day with students running from one event to the next. Despite the storm the previous day, the competition still took place with a one hour delay. Students travelled to Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale to put their abilities to the test. By the end of the day, Floral Park students medaled in three of the events: Chris Couluris and Elizabeth Talero came in 4th for Anatomy & Physiology, Chris Couluris and Thomas Quinlan came in 6th for Cell Biology, and Thomas Quinlan and Kate Espinal came in 2nd for Green Generation. Overall, Floral Park came in 18th out of 36 teams. In terms of schools, Floral Park finished in the top ten for the day. Floral Park came in 1st within the district, finishing ahead of Sewanhaka and New Hyde Park’s A, B, and C teams. Mr. William Rockensies has been the team’s head coach for the past five years.
