A victory over New Hyde Park could be attributed to playing the cross-town rival. A second victory might be explained by Valley Stream North not taking Floral Park seriously.

But after Saturday’s impressive upset of Lynbrook, the Floral Park Knights have clearly proved that they did not deserve their pre-season bottom seeding of 14.

In Floral Park’s 10-7 upset of the Owls, senior Harry Fingleton’s school-record 45 yard field goal was the difference. Even after losing key players from last year, the Knights are clearly on top of their game and playing with confidence. Not only does the team have amazing chemistry, the players are also highly committed to working hard in preparation for each opponent. When they are not on the field playing their hearts out, they are practicing every day after school improving themselves as a team. And the results are quite obvious. The confidence level of the team is very high.

Mr. Spina, in his 22nd year as head coach, when asked about the team’s chances of making the playoffs, said, “It’s going to be tough because as a 14 seed you almost have to be perfect. I do love the way the team is playing, the attitude is totally different than it was last year. Right now we’re not thinking about playoffs, we’re just thinking about playing one game at a time and enjoying the season.”

Spina added, “I think we’re more team oriented. The guys that didn’t get a lot of playing time last year and the guys that came up from JV probably aren’t intimidated. They’ve put in extra work.”

If the Knights keep playing the way they have for the past three games, they should have a realistic shot and securing a playoff berth. The next contest is Saturday, October 1, against Roslyn. Game time is 2:00 pm at Floral Park Memorial.
