National Hispanic American Heritage runs from September 15th to October 15th in the United States. It is all about celebrating Hispanic cultures, history, music, food, and traditions. September 15th is very important for those countries that got their independence, such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. There are also very important people who have Spanish roots such as Sonia Sotomayor, who was the first Hispanic woman in the United States Supreme Court. Also, Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Hispanic woman to go to space. It’s important to know the significance of Spanish heritage month in order to show appreciation for those people of Hispanic descent that have greatly impacted the history of the United States. Hispanic customs and traditions include music and dances such as mariachi, salsa, bachata, and tango. Food events include foods such as tacos, tamales, empanadas, and paella. Many cities also host festivals and parades which highlight the Hispanic culture. Here are what some teachers from FPM have to say about Hispanic heritage month. “I think Hispanic heritage month is important to celebrate since we have many Hispanic people in our country from different parts of the world. I think it’s important for people to be aware of the connections we have in this country to our Hispanic roots”. – Senorita Powers.
“I think that Hispanic heritage month allows students to learn about cultures that they’re not familiar with. It’s important to learn about it because it allows students to become more open minded and be more familiar with different cultures and perspectives.” – Senorita Griffo.
At Floral Park Memorial High School, Spanish teachers throughout many grades are teaching their classes about Hispanic heritage month through a variety of activities and lessons. For instance, in Spanish 4 Advanced students have learned about Cesar Chavez and watched a movie chronicling his life. This taught the class about how he was a labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. Lastly, the Foreign Language Department began playing a songs over the loudspeakers from different Hispanic singers. Students all over the school got to enjoy the music throughout the day! This is how Floral Park Memorial High School celebrates Hispanic American Heritage month during September and October.
