Have you ever seen yourself producing television, majoring in broadcast journalism, or learning how to work cameras and sound systems? If so, you may be interested in volunteering at the local TV studio, Four Village Studio, also referred to as 4VS.
This small studio, located at Floral Park’s Town Hall, is the perfect place to gain valuable experience about broadcasting. It is student-run and relies on volunteers to help with filming. The staff, led by James Green, guides students through all the aspects of filming, from the behind the scenes controls to camera work. Many Floral Park alumni have gone on to succeed in journalism and broadcasting-related majors and careers, thanks to experience gained at 4VS. The hours spent at the studio can also count as volunteer hours for honor societies and college resumes.
The television programs filmed at the studio are aired on local Optimum channels, Altice, USA, and Channel 18 and 28 through Verizon Fios. Additionally, episodes are released on the channel’s website, www.4VS.org. All volunteers who assist with filming can even see their names posted in the episode credits. The type of programs filmed vary, from music shows with local bands to book discussions with independent authors. The shows have won multiple awards at the Alliance for Community Media Northeast Regional Video Festival and are appreciated by local community members. Local events, such as the recent 100th Anniversary Parade of South Floral Park, are filmed by the studio as well.
For those interested in becoming a volunteer, there are some requirements. All volunteers must be 15 years of age or older, and they must contact the studio for an informational interview. No prior knowledge of media production is needed to be part of the staff, but a genuine interest in the field is valued. Volunteers should also be able to make quick decisions and build on the skills they are taught at the studio. All episodes are filmed in a “live-to tape” format, meaning all episodes are recorded as if they are live, and then edited before release. Overall, the studio is an amazing opportunity for those interested in media production and offers great learning opportunity as well.
