After falling behind by two goals in the first half of Friday’s Nassau County Class A semifinal boys’ soccer game vs. Carey, and facing the prospect of playing one man down for the second half, it appeared that Floral Park’s inspired postseason run was about to come to an end.

But there’s something special about this year’s Knights roster. And as dominant as Carey had looked in the opening minutes, Floral Park regrouped at halftime and provided its fans with a stunning second-half performance.

“The coaches gave us a really inspiring halftime speech,” said junior Luke de Armas.

“Many of us, including myself, thought our season was over,” said senior Kyle Darden. “Some of us were in tears, but we came out like we wanted it more than them in the second half.”

“Our coaches told us to keep our head up, and keep fighting,” said senior Jonathan Ferone.

Whatever was said by coaches Pokojny and Chablani should be published and sold. An early goal by de Armas sparked a four-goal onslaught by Floral Park as the sixth-seeded Knights shocked 18th-seeded Carey High School 4-2, advancing to the Nassau County Championship game.

Lorenzo Arrindell tied the game at two, setting the stage for Ferone’s score that gave the Knights the lead. He celebrated with an impressive sideline dance for the loud Floral Park crowd.

“The feeling is indescribable, it’s surreal,” said Ferone.

A second goal by de Armas put the finishing touches on what was one of the most remarkable playoff performances in Floral Park sports history.

“The game shows that we can come back from anything if we play together as a team,” said de Armas.

Floral Park will face ninth-seeded Jericho High School in the county finals on Wednesday at Bethpage High School. The game will begin at 5:00 pm.
