What better way to start the holiday season than for students to bring a smile to the faces of the elderly.

On Tuesday, December 12th, the Floral Park Florettes took a trip to the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Jericho. The purpose was to perform for its residents. The Florettes arrived, expecting to receive a round of applause but left with appreciation as well as unexpected feelings of hope and happiness that lingered for the entire week.

The residents at the Arbors facility have a lot of free time. They play bingo, have birthday parties, and watch television. And when all else fails, they play more bingo. This often results in boredom setting in as the residents seeks further entertainment to occupy their time.

The Florettes performed a routine to the song “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. The residents roared in applause and cheers after the performance. Afterwards, the team handed out cookies and mingled with the residents. Among the residents were two Korean War veterans and a World War II veteran. They told the team of stories when Marilyn Monroe entertained the servicemen in Korea and even displayed some of their own dance moves. The girls were then greeted by nearly 101-year-old Lydia who showed off her own kicks that she learned through physical therapy. The girls were even fortunate enough to meet Lucille, the aunt of kickline advisor and English teacher Ms. Morra. Lucille spent time discussing the accomplishments of her relatives and showing the Florettes the crafts she had created.

The residents of the Arbors facility just wanted someone to share their stories with. The Florettes were able to be that someone on Tuesday. In the spirit of the holiday season, give the gift of listening to someone. Listen to the stories that your grandparents tell. Listen to a friend’s problems. Listen to your parents. Most people just want to be heard. Help to be a person that makes someone else look forward to tomorrow.

Happy Holidays!
