Any student who has had the pleasure of taking a class with Ms. Mamo in the Science Department knows how passionate she is about environmental issues. As the adviser to the Ecology Club, she once again supervised students during the club’s annual beach cleanup.

On September 19, at 9:00 am, 23 FPM students traveled to Zach’s Bay at Jones Beach. The long day consisted of walking two hours off the island and back to the bus, collecting garbage and wood. During those early hours, the students accumulated 38 pounds of garbage, 118 pounds of wood and 43 pounds of other items that needed to be cleaned off the beach. Some of the other items found included plastic bottle caps, firecrackers and food wrappers. The students also discovered styrofoam, broken glass, beer cans, plastic bags and water bottles. Some of the participants even found a hat, boogie board and fly swatter.

There is a showcase on the first floor for those interested in seeing more from the event. Anyone interested in joining the Ecology Club should check for the announcement of the next meeting.
