The Jets Win, The Jets Win

Behind strong defensive effort, the New York Jets derail Dolphins for first victory of the year

Coming into the 2017 season with a roster depleted by trades and the releasing of players, New York Jets’ fans seemed like they were destined for an 0-16 season. With holes at almost every position, the number one selection in the upcoming NFL draft seemed like a near certainty for a team with minimal chance of winning a game. The only question was whether or not students at Floral Park Memorial would be brave enough to wear their green and white jerseys in school.

Well that assumption was short-lived.

The New York Jets picked up their first victory of the young season on Sunday, cruising past the Miami Dolphins 20-6.

The 38-year-old veteran Josh McCown looked like one of the better quarterbacks in the league as he completed 18 of 23 passes with one touchdown and no interceptions. Miami’s defense, which held the Chicago Bears in check the previous week, looked porous and slow as Jet wideouts torched the secondary all afternoon. This was especially the case for second-year receiver Robby Anderson who had three catches for 95 yards and a score. Coming into Week three without a touchdown, running back Bilal Powell finally found the end zone after taking over for an injured Matt Forte. Powell was a breakout player for the Jets last season as he provided a huge spark for a lowly offense. In the process, he angered all fantasy football players who dropped him after his dreadful first two weeks.

Although the offense was nothing short of impressive, the underrated defense stole the show with two takeaways, and only one final play away from a shutout. After allowing an astonishing 180 rushing yards to Oakland Raider running backs in Week 2, All-Pro defensive tackle Leonard Williams and company held Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi to a measly 16 yards on 11 attempts. Not only was Ajayi ineffective, but quarterback Jay Cutler was chased all over the field, seemingly throwing more to Jets’ defensive backs than his own wide receivers. The last time the Jets allowed six or fewer points in a game was back in 2012.

With a strong showing from a rejuvenated and hungry squad, it’ll be interesting to see which Jets team will show up next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1). Playing yet another game in front of the rowdy fans at MetLife, Gang Green will look to Jet Up and continue its dominance against Blake Bortles and the first place Jags.

Plan on seeing far more green and white jerseys in school this week.
