What is that coming toward you? Is it a Raptor? Is it a Pelican? Is it a Hornet? No, it’s actually a 7’3 unicorn who’s about to put you on a poster and end your career. His name is Kristaps Porzingis, and he is an unstoppable force.

Born in Liepaja, Latvia, Porzingis started playing basketball at the young age of 6, taking after both his parents and older brother Janis. From 2012 to 2015, he played for Cajasol Sevilla where he dominated the competition on the offensive end of the court while continuing to work on his defense and aggression. He originally declared himself eligible for the NBA draft in 2014, but withdrew his name just days before because he felt there was still room for improvement. After gaining another year of experience, Porzingis officially announced he would enter the 2015 NBA draft. Many experts saw him as a possible bust and not worth a top 5 pick, but the Knicks saw otherwise. On June 25th, 2015, Kristaps Porzingis was drafted fourth overall by the New York Knicks, and as the boos rained down, New York Knick fans had no idea how good of a player they had just added to their team.

Porzingis had a solid rookie campaign as he averaged 14.3 points, 1.9 blocks and 7.3 rebounds per game, good enough for him to be named to the 2015-16 All-Rookie first team. KP just missed being named Rookie of the Year, an honor that went to Timberwolves Center Karl-Anthony Towns. Working alongside veterans Carmelo Anthony and Jose Calderon in first NBA season, Porzingis flashed his potential. It seemed like it would only be a matter of time before the unicorn would become the next big thing. But, the next season took a turn for the worse. Team failures in the 2016-17 season surely didn’t rest on the shoulders of Porzingis, but he did contribute to their struggles. With ball hogs Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony, along with the overpaid and unreliable center Joakim Noah, Porzingis wasn’t able to flourish on the court. While he did improve in the scoring column and his other stats remained relatively similar, injuries prevented him from taking that next step.

A busy offseason for the Knicks led to a purging of the roster, with virtually no veterans left. D-Rose joined Lebron James in a stacked Cleveland lineup while Melo was traded to Oklahoma City. Along with newly acquired Paul George and MVP Russell Westbrook, this OKC team seemed destined for greatness and the Knicks seemed destined for disaster. This, so far, has proven untrue thanks to the forthcoming of our lord and savior Kristaps Porzingod.

MVP! MVP! MVP! The chants echo throughout the walls of the world’s most famous arena in New York City. The MSG crowd is all aboard the hype train as a now healthy KP has taken the NBA by storm. Every blocked shot, every drained three, every tomahawk slam brings the crowd into a frenzy. With young and talented players surrounding him such as Enes Kanter and Frank Ntilikina, Porzingis now has the ability to shoot more and penetrate the defense with ease. Averaging almost 30 points a game and making opposing forwards look foolish, Porzingis has turned into the real deal, and the show is just getting started.

One quick, final question: Do you know what Kevin Durant, Lebron James, and James Harden all have in common? Answer-None of them will ever be the unicorn, Kristaps Porzingis.
