It may have been Valentine’s Day, but there was no love being sent by Floral Park Memorial’s girls’ varsity basketball team.

Video from the opening minutes of the Lady Knights’ playoff victory against Great Neck South could be used as a clinic on how to play basketball the right way. There were more passes on the first possession than Great Neck South had points in the opening quarter as Floral Park raced out to a 22-2 lead in its 52-43 victory.

“I was so proud of how the team came out with incredible energy and passion right from the opening tip,” said coach Mr. Spina. “They were so unselfish and executed the game-plan brilliantly.”

Senior Marykate Guerriero, who leads all girls on Long Island with 80 three-pointers, was unconscious from behind the line, hitting seven on the night. She finished the game with 30 points but received contributions from everyone else in the impressive home victory.

Fellow seniors Ashley Corcoran, Megan Martin and Kiera Boettcher provided steady all-around play while sophomore Jaeda Delsoin used her shifty ball-handling skills to get into the paint whenever she wanted. Junior Kelly Ventura and sophomore Amanda Kozak each added a basket and grabbed several key rebounds as the Blazers attempted to catch up late. Noa Fisher led Great Neck South with 14 points.

The 13th-seeded advanced to play 4th-seeded Seaford on Friday, February 16.
