The influence of a great teacher will never be forgotten. And of all the beloved teachers at Floral Park Memorial, one who continues to shine intensely is Ms. Canone from the Social Studies Department.

School is not always the most enjoyable place for students, especially during a time when the overemphasis on test results seems to be draining the life out of lessons. But when a teacher like Ms. Canone is able to rise above these restrictions, the result is a class that students look forward to each and every day. They are angry when the period is over and can’t wait for the next day. Students show their tremendous gratitude and recall delightful memories from Ms. Canone’s classes. She brings energy to the classroom, makes learning about history interesting, knows how to connect with students and make them hunger and thirst for knowledge. Ms. Canone builds up students’ minds and makes them strive to be the best they can be.

Ms. Canone teaches both pre-AP World History and Advanced Placement Human Geography at Floral Park Memorial. As the first teacher in the Sewanhaka Central High School District to prepare for the Human Geography course, Ms. Canone worked tirelessly to familiarize herself with an exciting but challenging class. She has seen her students receive incredibly impressive results on the AP exam, a testament to her hard work and dedication. And she has done so by primarily teaching the course to 9th graders. These students benefit enormously from taking an AP class as freshmen with a teacher who is a nurturing and patient as Ms. Canone. This helps them greatly as many go on to take as many as ten AP courses while at FPM.

Ms. Canone decided to become a teacher while in middle school, inspired by Ms. Nancy Treanor from Oceanside. Ms. Canone was impressed with her ability to connect the lessons to the lives of students and make history come alive. Ms. Canone earned her B.A. in History from Hofstra University. Upon graduation, she received her Master’s Degree in Education from Molloy College, becoming certified to teach social studies in grades 7-12. She has been teaching at FPM for over 13 years and has thoroughly enjoyed her career. So who is this teacher so many have come to admire?

Ms. Canone is a lover of the beach. She spends her summer breaks trying to tan but fails to do so. She loves Game of Thrones, mystery novels, but has an even greater love for Netflix. As any student who has had her before would know, she is an avid Rangers fan and can be seen wearing her jersey in the hallway on special days. Another interesting fact is that Ms. Canone comes from a family of tall people where she is one of the shortest. She claims her dream vacation would be going to Europe and visiting all the places she teaches about. She would also like to take her students on a tour of New York City and show them what it has to offer. She always has her cup of coffee, iPad, and energy (hence the coffee) every day for school.

Ms. Canone has an intense passion and love for her students. She says the best thing about being a teacher is being able to know many amazing kids. The most challenging aspect of the job is grading papers. She maintains her focus on the students when there are difficult moments of the job. Ms. Canone makes connections with her students by getting to know their interests.

“It has been especially great working as a class advisor and creating elaborate hallways with the kids and planning events for them,” said Ms. Canone. ” I hope my students know I care and put in my own time for their success.”

Ms. Canone always tells her students to try their best and don’t stress, forget about the little things and keep a positive attitude. She is a phenomenal teacher who gives all to her students and wants what is best for them. She is more than just a teacher, she is an inspiration to all.
