Blazing Hot Start

One possession.

One Frankie Phelan cross-over dribble. One pass. And one Jayson Delgado deep corner three pointer.

That’s all it took for the Floral Park Memorial boys’ varsity basketball team to completely erase any hope that Great Neck South had of pulling off the upset in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup.

The play ended with a made shot by Delgado, who was fouled and converted the free throw, giving the third-seeded Knights a 4-0 start in its 70-35 thrashing of the sixth-seeded Blazers.

“I worked hard all summer,” said the junior Delgado on his first season on the varsity. “Playing with such a great senior group helps a lot.”

The game featured a true contrast in styles. Floral Park is the top scoring team in Nassau County while Great Neck South was regularly holding opponents below 50 points a game. It appeared that the Blazers’ game plan was going to be to run the shot clock down on every possession. But the early offensive onslaught by Floral Park, coupled with its ferocious trapping defense made it impossible to execute.

Whether it was Brian Fox getting to the rim at will or Frankie Phelan kicking out to Matt Jounakos or Delgado for uncontested three pointers, Great Neck South simply had no answers. The Knights led 37-19 at the half and cruised from that point on.

Strong interior defense by Michael Matich and Michael Incantalupo was a great compliment to the four-guard attack by Floral Park. The Knights were simply much faster, stronger and better all around against a Great Neck South team that finished first in its conference this year with a record of 11-1.

Floral Park advanced to the semifinals where the Knights will take on district-rival and second-seeded Sewanhaka. The Indians finished the regular season with a 12-0 record in league play. The game will be played on Wednesday, February 28 at 7:30 pm at SUNY Farmingdale.
