Basic Kerala Style Salmon (Serves One)

Salmon is one of my favorite fish to eat. The spice mix I use here is so simple that I use it almost every day, not to mention you can double or triple the spice amount and save it separately for whenever you need some spice in your life. My family uses this spice mix for pretty much everything, and it’s pretty reminiscent of our Kerala spice mix. As someone who prides themselves on laziness, this dish is easy, quick, and doesn’t require a lot of cooking expertise. Let’s go!

What You’ll Need:

  • Half Teaspoon of Cayenne
  • Half Teaspoon of Paprika
  • Half Teaspoon of Turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Cooking Spray or Olive Oil
  • One small salmon filet
  1. In a small bowl mix the cayenne, paprika, turmeric, salt, and pepper. Add a very small amount of water to make it into a paste. Please be careful not to add too much water and make a liquid. That mistake has happened one too many times and it is not pretty.
  2. Wash your salmon thoroughly. Then rub in a generous amount of your spice mix on both sides. Once it’s all covered completely, it’s time to cook!
  3. To pan fry the fish, you can spray a nonstick pan with cooking spray or olive oil. Then, when it’s nice and hot, place your fish down and you should hear a nice sizzle. Let the salmon cook for a few minutes on either side until both sides are nicely browned and the smaller sides are crispy and delicious.
  4. You’re done! I recommend serving with boiled or oven roasted potatoes and a green vegetable. Here I have some boiled potatoes and a whole apple cut into pieces. Enjoy!
