This past Tuesday Floral Park Memorial High School held its Fourth Annual Faculty Basketball Game. Although the game was mainly for student entertainment, it was quite obvious that the teachers came to win. The faculty did not disappoint as the highly competitive game ended 46-44. The event was run by the boys’ varsity lacrosse team.

The game started off slow but Mr. Obloj energized the crowd with two three-point field goals. The first quarter ended with a score of 8-6. Mr. Wachs, the former Harlem Globetrotter, started off the second quarter with a quick basket. Mr. Drivas tried to show off on defense by blocking Ms. D’Ammassa, but right away was called for a foul. Drivas then tried to go for a layup but could not finish. Assistant Principal Mr. Kenny showed off his all-star layups for a total of six points. At the end of the half the teachers did not look like they could continue, but they were determined to keep playing.

After an unusually short five-minute halftime, the teachers had to get back on the court. The second half started with Mr. Glatzer missing a layup but making up for it with an amazing steal. The whole crowd cheered for Mr. Obloj when he drove to the basket to dunk the ball. Even though he missed, the crowd was still happy to see someone attempt a dunk. At the start of the fourth quarter the score was tied 24-24 and the teachers really started to show off their athletic ability. Mr. Kenny had three, three pointers and Mr. Freely added one three pointer and a two. Both teams tried their hardest to score and get the win but the second half ended 42-42. This led to overtime.

At the beginning of overtime, the crowd was on its feet waiting to see who would score next. Both teams tried desperately to score but couldn’t and the game went into double overtime. Mr. Freely got the ball and went headfirst into the wall trying to score. He then redeemed himself with a two to put his team up 44-42, but Ms. D’Ammassa scored again to tie the game. Double overtime ended and the game went into sudden death. The ball was tipped off and the teams went back and forth trying for the winning basket. Finally, Mr. Kuczinski, a member of the PALS department, received the ball and scored the game winner.

It was another great event for the students at Floral Park Memorial. However, the teachers likely felt the physical pain in the morning.
