Floral Park Memorial’s girls’ varsity basketball team defeats Elmont, 60-49, winning the Nassau County Class A Championship

COUNTY CHAMPIONS

The 18-1 regular season record demonstrated that the Floral Park Memorial girls’ varsity basketball team was one of the best in Nassau County.

The 27-12 first quarter dominance over defending champion North Shore, en route to a solid 69-62 semifinal victory, earned the Lady Knights bragging rights over their Conference III rival.

But it was Saturday’s convincing 60-49 win over the top-seeded Elmont Spartans in the Nassau County Class A Championship at Adelphi University that has put Floral Park in position to play for a state title.

The four playoff wins over Roosevelt, Island Trees, North Shore and Elmont have demonstrated how incredibly balanced the team has been on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Kaela Hilaire has led the offensive attack with her 38.3 points per game in the playoffs. But Coach Spina has also received stellar play by Natalie Hickman, Marykate Guerrero, Faith Balletta and Aideen Gill along with key performances off the bench from Laura Streiber, Ashley Corcoran and Laura Ortiz.

Floral Park will play Section XI (Suffolk County) champion Islip on Saturday, March 5 at 12:00 pm at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.
