It was quite a week for the girls’ volleyball team at Floral Park. One that should serve as motivation as the team heads into the playoffs in a few weeks.

On Friday, October 7, the Lady Knights lost three games to one against first place Wantagh. Two days earlier, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to South Side in a fifth and final game. Floral Park is now 8-3 in Conference A-I, the top division in Nassau County, and likely to earn the three seed in the playoffs, behind Wantagh and South Side.

“We are doing really well,” said senior Alice Brandt. “We thought moving up a conference from last year was going to be tough but we knew we had to work hard if we wanted a chance at a county championship. Our preseason ranking was 8, and as of right now, we are in 3rd place.”

Although the team bounced back nicely with an easy sweep of Carey, Floral Park will need to break through against Wantagh in order to have a chance at a county championship. The Knights have played Wantagh twice this season and have lost both times.

On Friday, Floral Park came out very strong. The Knights were in control on both offense and defense and were outplaying Wantagh. The team, having built up this home game for weeks, used the adrenaline to race out to an early lead. The tone was set, and Floral Park appeared ready to pull off the significant victory. But Wantagh withstood the early onslaught and won the first game 25-15. During the second game, Floral Park started out slowly but was able to recover and win a hard-fought 25-23 game. Floral Park struggled to take control in the third and fourth games as Wantagh was able to hand Floral Park its third loss of the season, and first on its home court. Even though the Knights did not win, it was very impressive watching the team come together and stay focused against an outstanding opponent.

The girls will likely have to go through both South Side and Wantagh to win a county championship, but anything is possible for this experienced and hungry team.

“Our team is filled with talent and determination that has helped us stay in the top three of our conference,” said senior Grace Brandt. “I have a very strong feeling about the playoffs. All we need to do is trust each other and play the way we have been playing.”

“I know we have what it takes to beat them,” said Alice Brandt.
