April is Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to learning about autism and showing support for people in our communities who have autism. At school, awareness all starts with understanding – which will help us create a kindness filled, respectful, and inclusive FPM community. Whether it’s a big school campaign or a local community event, here’s a look at what Autism Awareness Month is all about.
One of the most important things to remember is that students with autism are not defined by their diagnosis. They can be classmates, teammates, artists, gamers, and friends. Like everyone else, they have strengths, challenges, talents, and dreams. During the month of April we learned about autism and to how to be aware of the amazing people who have it, but not to let it define them. This teaching helps us move past the ignorant stereotypes and start seeing people for who they really are.
Autism is a neurological difference that affects how people communicate, learn, and experience the world. Some students with autism may be very talkative, while others may be quiet. Some may be sensitive to loud sounds or bright lights, and others might have strong interests in specific subjects like art, math, or technology. Since autism looks different for every person, it’s important to remember that being different doesn’t mean someone is less important than anyone else. Small actions can make a big difference especially during Autism Awareness month. Just by being patient, inviting someone to join a group, or standing up against teasing or bullying, your small action will help us create an inclusive school at FPM by making sure everyone feels safe and respected.
Our differences are what make our FPM community stronger. By learning, listening, and showing kindness, we can help build a place where everyone belongs, not just in April, but all year long.
