Following an exceptional 2025/2026 season, the Floral Park Memorial boys varsity basketball team secured the Class A Long Island Championship title. The Shield recently reached out to Coach Sean Boyle to reflect on the team’s achievements and the defining moments of their championship pursuit.
Staff: Looking back at the beginning of the season, was there a specific moment—a tough loss or a win—where you realized this group of players had exactly what it takes to compete for a Long Island title?
Coach Boyle: I believe we knew what type of group we had after losing in the LIC a year ago and competing all summer vs the top public and Catholic schools in the summer league.
Staff: Beyond the stats and the scoring, what is the ‘hidden’ strength of this team that doesn’t always show up in the score, but has been significant to this post-season run?
Coach Boyle: Our team’s hidden strength this year was our senior leadership and the bond among teammates. Our team chemistry was great all season, kids worked hard and pushed one and other towards the common team goal.
Staff: The atmosphere at a championship game can be different than a regular season game. How did you prepare the team to stay focused on their game plan during the games at Farmingdale?
Coach Boyle: This year’s group had an advantage over the other teams playing on that court three times the previous year. We knew what the bright lights would be like and the boys were ready to shine.
Staff: Regardless of the final score on the scoreboard, what is the one lesson or value you hope these athletes carry with them from this championship experience into the rest of their lives?
Coach Boyle: My hope is that these boys remember all the fun bus rides, laughs in the locker room, jokes in the film room, and have a positive memory of what they accomplished this season. Most wins in a season 22, Most wins by any team in Nassau County, and most of all the school’s first ever Boy’s Long Island Championship.
It was an amazing season! The Floral Park community is eagerly looking forward to what the boys bring to the court next year!
