“He’s running down the sideline! Past the 15, 10, 5… TOUCHDOWN Charles Mealing! With just ten seconds off the clock, Mealing had put the Knights up by 6 on a huge kick return!”

This huge play not only set the tone for the game, and a thorough Homecoming blowout victory, as Floral Park dominated Valley Stream North, 34-6.

Everything was working in this one as the Knights’ ground and pound attack was in full gear. The team combined for 250 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns scored, one each for Marco Montreuil, Jim Ollen, and Craig Schiavone. Meanwhile, the Spartans were unable to get anything going as FPM’s secondary held their quarterback Joe Gisonda to a 4-for-12 line with only 70 yards through the air and one interception. While the Knights’ defense has been solid all season, this was far and away their best game yet.

Senior quarterback Mitch Kozak continues to finish off his years at Floral Park strong, completing 6 of 11 passes for 111 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Mike Matich and Mike Kelly had three catches and 29 yards between them, but this week’s biggest star and player of the game is easily Senior wide receiver Charles Mealing. His kick return touchdown was just one of his many highlights on the day. Late in the second quarter, Kozak found Mealing for a deep 45-yard touchdown that put the Knights up 27-6. Then, just as the Spartans appeared to be on the verge of a comeback, Mealing put an exclamation point on the Homecoming celebration with his first interception of the season.

“Win,” said a succinct Kozak when asked about the upcoming game plan for Bethpage. Check back soon to The Shield for a one-on-one interview with the multi-sport Floral Park athlete.

The Knights will look to even their record at 2-2 with a road game on Saturday, September 29 against the Golden Eagles.
